This year, air freight prices have been on a steady incline as compared to last. While it doesn't seem like demand for air travel is high enough yet in order justify these higher rates of increase - capacity increased 17% and dynamic load factor decreased 3 percentage points during October 2017 when comparing this time period from one year ago- but there are still those who use the service each month which indicates that not all flights may be full despite recent increases in cost.

Stifel's recent findings highlight that air freight rates in October remained "perched at elevated levels, well beyond those seen in 2020." Air freight is becoming more and more expensive as the supply chain continues to reel from congestion. Analysis has shown that this trend will continue, with conversion happening at sea for essential peak inventory--a practice known as "air-to-sea" shipping.

Airlines have added transatlantic flights to accommodate European travellers who are now allowed into the US. The importers were hopeful that these extra cargo spaces would bring down air freight rates, which had been more than twice typical levels due to a shortage of capacity--but so far this has not worked out as they planned.
